Photodynamic Therapy

Anti-ageing treatment

PDT is the use of a photosensitising agent, 5ALA (Aminolevulonic Acid) and then activated by light to regenerate the cells and reduce sun damage.

ALA is a natural product found throughout the body and essential for haemoglobin synthesis. PDT kills unhealthy damaged cells, assisting in the formation of fresh healthy new skin. The results are clearer, smoother and healthier glowing skin. PDT can be used to treat;

  • fine lines and large pores
  • blotchy or poor quality skin
  • rosacea
  • psoriasis
  • warts
  • hypertropic lesions
  • sun spots and freckles
  • acne
  • cystic acne
  • Bowens disease (medical)
  • sebaceous gland hyperplasia
  • seborrhieic keratoses

PDT for acne treatment

Acne is a common problem, especially for teenagers. Research has proven that 30% of patients are cured of acne following one treatment and up to 60% following two** as an alternate treatment to Roaccutane™ without the side effects associated with Roaccutane™ use.  PDT works by;

  • the destruction of sebaceous glands
  • destruction of P.Acnes, the bacteria that causes acne,
  • improves the texture and tone of skin

This treatment is suitable for those that have not responded well to antibiotics and prefer not to proceed with Roaccutane™. Most can expect an improvement in two weeks.

** With use of daily home care

Post treatment your skin will need to go through normal healing. Expect that your skin will feel sunburnt and appear red and for some, mild swelling for 1 – 2 days. Your skin may also flake, crust or peel for 7 – 10 days.  It is best to avoid the sun for 24 – 48 hours. Sun exposure will result in a burning sensation on the skin known as photosensitivity, and will pass after 48 hours.

All skins respond differently depending on the skins condition, and may require 1 – 4 treatments for optimal results.
